DDoS attacks have continued to increase in number and sophistication, including those that can now leverage consumer IoT devices as a part of the attack. Who is behind DDoS attacks and what is their motivation? There are different reasons why DDoS attacks are launched, from theft or revenge against a specific target, to simply the thrill of bringing down a network.

Over time the types of DDoS attacks being launched have changed. They are no longer limited to volumetric attacks that are meant to tie up every bit of available bandwidth.  Sometimes they are more subtle. Often more than one type of attack is launched on a target concurrently or in stages to increase the overall effectiveness.

In this video from one of our live Tech Tuesday broadcasts I discuss with Paul Dragin from A10 Networks the different kinds of DDoS attacks and some of the reasons why they are launched.
