Being able to provide fast, reliable, AND affordable broadband access to all parts of the country has been a goal that has created several public policy discussions about deployment and getting access to underserved areas. In attempting to bridge the broadband gap, billions in federal funding have been allocated through programs like the Connect America Fund (CAF), the Rural Development Opportunity Fund (RDOF), and most recently, the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA). With the funding being made available to create much needed broadband opportunities, many providers are starting to take advantage of the benefits that these funds can bring to their broadband business.
While much attention is being directed at fiber expansions from the the big telecom and cable companies, electric cooperatives have created a consistent momentum in being able to provide broadband to some of the most difficult areas to reach. Plus, having access to middle mile fiber assets creates a unique opportunity to offer retail broadband to their customers that can potentially be subsidized by the government.
